I just finished reading the paper version of this article. Very well done and interesting. Highly recommend it. There are several subthemes. The one that intrigued me was that the impact of the North Dakota oil rush is a relatively short lived economic boom. The state charges a pretty hefty tax on the oil and are building up cash reserves. One possible outcome is to plan for the future and parlee that tax into building electric transmission lines that would create the opportunity to bring the vast wind resources of the state to market. This would create a sustainable economic legacy of the oil boom for generations to come.
